TRADE DEADLINE TALK - RECENT "RENTAL" PLAYERS Published: February 24, 2008 - By Brent| Print Email
RENTALS! For fun, here is a review of recent 'rental' players. Looking back, none of these trades paid off so the question is, what will the value of a rental player be this year? It is most interesting for the 08 trade deadline with names like Sundin, Hossa, Boyle and Campbell floating around who are as of right now, UFA's next year, what their value will be this year? =================== PETER FORSBERG Philadelphia Flyers traded Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators for Ryan Parent, Scottie Upshall, a 1st round selection and a 3rd round selection in 2007. KEITH TKACHUK St. Louis Blues traded Keith Tkachuk to the Atlanta Thrashers for Glen Metropolit, a first and third-round draft pick in 2007 and a second-round draft pick in 2008. DOUG WEIGHT St. Louis Blues traded Doug Weight and the rights to Erkki Rajamaki to the Carolina Hurricanes for Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis, the rights to Magnus Kahnberg, a 1 st and a 4th round selections in 2006 and a 4th round selection in 2007. RYAN SMYTH Edmonton Oilers traded Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders for Robert Nilsson, Ryan OMarra and a 1st round selection in 2007 MARK RECCHI Pittsburgh Penguins traded Mark Recchi to the Carolina Hurricanes for Niklas Nordgren, Krystofer Kolanos and a 2nd round selection in 2007. LADISLAV NAGY Phoenix Coyotes traded Ladislav Nagy to the Dallas Stars for Mathias Tjarnqvist and a first round selection in 2007. TODD BERTUZZI Florida Panthers traded Todd Bertuzzi to the Detroit Red Wings for Shawn Matthias, a conditional draft selection in 2007 and a conditional 2nd round selection in 2008. =================== Being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan myself, I would extremely pleased to see Mats sent out of town for a couple months in exchange for propspect and picks like some of these previous deals. The question is whether GM's are willing to pay the same price as these deals last year involved. I believe many teams will pay the price with an all or nothing approach,,, some of these recent deals seem unbelievable but the fact is, they were real big risk trades that sane GM's agreed to and I believe we will see it again.
